A Techno-Economic-Ecological Assessment of Solar Power Generation on Campus using openLCA Software

CHE 4420: Sustainable Chemical Engineering

My team was tasked with evaluating the use of solar power generation on LSU's campus using the life-cycle assessment tool openLCA.

We investigated the technological and economic impacts of installing solar panels on campus roofing as well as maintenance over the panels' lifetimes. Additionally, the ecological footprint of the panels were evaluated from cradle-to-grave, comparing this system to its alternative of purchasing electricity made from natural gas.

Junior Year Process Optimization Project

CHE 3171: Introduction to Design and Process Safety

This project assignment concerned a propylene refrigeration cycle as part of a much larger ethylene cracking system. My team was tasked with optimizing the refrigeration cycle, evaluating the net present value of the process based on different system drivers, and identifying credible process safety events.

We simulated the process in Aspen Plus and coded the economics calculations in Fortran. Using a semi-quantitative risk matrix, we introduced safeguards (Independent Protection Layers) to our process to mitigate the process to the optimal risk level.

The Aspen Plus simulation for this project is located in the “Technological” section.

CRISPR: Engineering the Future of Genetics

CHE 4220: Genetic Engineering

This project was part of the requirement for a CI contract in my Genetic Engineering class. This project assignment concerned researching and presenting a poster on a topic in Genetic Engineering.

I chose to research CRISPR, a novel gene-editing tool, and discuss not only it's incredible successes and potential, but also the negative side of human germline editing and the future research needed before this can be used wide-scale.

Mitochondrial Eve

CHE 4220: Genetic Engineering

This assignment was to prepare a video discussing one of the course's assigned books, pick a topic inspired by the book, and summarize the topic, highlighting some current areas of related research. My team chose the book "Neanderthal Man: In Search of Lost Genomes" by Svante Paabo and discussed the inspired topic, Mitochondrial Eve, in the video.

Density Matters!

ME 2733: Materials of Engineering

This bonus assignment was to give a K-12 class a lecture and perform an experiment to demonstrate that science and engineering are everywhere in real life.  My team decided to present on density, how the concept of density surrounds us in everyday life, and why density matters.

* Due to COVID-19, the project assignment was altered to allow us to make a video of the demonstration that would have been given in-person.

Heat and Mass Transfer Music Video

CHE 3102: Heat and Mass Transfer

This bonus assignment was to create an original music video about Heat and Mass Transfer concepts discussed in class. This was a really fun and unique way to review these topics with my friends outside of the classroom environment.

My team’s music video won first place!
